What is AyurDoula Care?

"After birth there is a Sacred Window of time; a time for complete rejuvenation of a woman’s physical, mental and spiritual health. A time for deep, extended bonding with her newborn. The first 42 days after birth set the stage for her next 42 years."   Ysha Oakes

Ayurveda is a 5,000 year old healing tradition, that acknowledges the journey to becoming a mother is a great transition. As with all transitions, something has to give way in order to make space for something else, making the first 6 weeks after childbirth a very fragile and sensitive time for both mother and baby; physically, spiritually and emotionally.

Today, we tend to focus more on the pregnancy and birth experience and less on how the time will look in the hours, days and weeks after childbirth.

A period of confinement after childbirth is encouraged by many traditional cultures, usually lasting around 40 days. During this time, the new mama will rest in bed, receive massages, have healing food brought to her, along with certain herbs to aid in the healing process. This allows her to focus on physical recovery, emotional connection with her sensitive newborn and to establish successful breastfeeding.

This period of rest and rejuvenation is absolutely vital to a full and successful recovery, but unfortunately many of us don't come with a village of support who understands the sensitivity and needs during this delicate transition. My role as a your postpartum doula is to provide multi-faceted support to you and your family so that this transformational time can be a treasured and nurtured experience!
